The 3rd EDM-CSWG, Expected to Strengthen Commitment in Environmental Management and Climate Change

Nusa Dua, Bali, Agustus 29th 2022 – The 3rd meeting of the Environment Deputies Meeting and Climate Sustanability Working Group (3rd G20 EDM-CSWG) will be held in Bali on 29-30 August 2022. The meeting will be conducted hybrid (present physically and some virtually) and attended by 211 delegates from G20 member countries, invited countries and International Organizations. This meeting is expected to increase efforts in managing the environment and climate change.

The EDM-CSWG meeting is chaired by Laksmi Dwanthi (Director General of Climate Change) and Sigit Reliantoro (Director General of Pollution and Environmental Damage Control) as vice chair. The working group level meeting will be followed by a ministerial level meeting, namely The Joint Environment and Climate Ministers’ Meeting (JECMM) on August 31, 2022, chaired by the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya.

The EDM-CSWG at the G20 Indonesia Presidency brings up three priority issues that will be the focus on discussion at each meeting. The three priority issues are: (1) Supporting more sustainable recovery; (2) Enhancing land-and sea-based actions to support environmental protection and climate objectives; and (3) Enhancing resource mobilization to support environmental protection and climate change objectives.

This third EDM-CSWG meeting is a continuation of a series of meetings which intensively discussed the three priority issues to achieve commitment among G20 member countries. In the process, the discussion on the commitment is rather challenging as it brings certain implications to some member countries. In addition, the current geopolitical condition also create a challenge in the ongoing negotiation process. This third meeting is expected to reach commitment of G20 member countries to continue enhancing efforts in environmental management and climate change.
