Take part in the G20 Social Participatory Public Consultation
On Tuesday, September 24th, the consultation process was opened on the documents that will serve as the basis for the discussions of the G20 Social Summit, which takes place in November in Rio.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE - To participate in the process, access the texts on the public consultation tab on the G20 Social Participatory page – a digital tool available in three languages and created exclusively for the G20 Social on the Brasil Participatory platform. The documents will be available until October 31st at https://gov.br/g20socialparticipativo. Contributions can be submitted per paragraph, with a total of 15 contribution fields for each document per person. Each thematic document presents three ideas as sub-themes. At the end of the process, a new systematization will be made that will serve as the basis for the plenary sessions at the G20 Social Summit, which takes place between November 14th and 16th, in the days before the G20 Summit Leaders' meeting, which takes place on November 18th and 19th.
From September the 24th, organizations and people from Brasil and abroad can contribute considerations and proposals to the texts that will guide the plenaries of the G20 Social Summit in November in Rio de Janeiro. The documents were produced based on discussions promoted by the Preparatory Meeting for the G20 Social Summit, held in August and attended by more than a thousand people from civil society organizations, grassroots movements and representatives of engagement groups – which organize self-managed debates and thematic recommendations at the G20.
The texts systematize the proposals discussed, according to international standards for reports and diplomatic documents, on the G20's three priority themes: fighting hunger, poverty, and inequality; reform of global governance and sustainability; and climate change and just transition.
"We are facing an unprecedented participatory process, in which the DNA of social participation of large networks and civil society organizations offer the international community a strong subsidy so that we can start from suggestions, demands and proposals widely discussed by Brazilian civil society, as a basis for the Summit debates," says Renato Simões, National Secretary of Social Participation, responsible for developing the methodology and conducting the public consultation process at the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic.
“We expect intense and qualified participation in this public consultation stage on the G20 Social Participatory platform. People can indicate changes and additions to the available texts,” explains the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency and coordinator of the G20 Social, Márcio Macêdo.
“The G20 Social extends the G20's relevance beyond economic and financial issues by strengthening discussions on global challenges more inclusively. Based on the voice and protagonism of society, we are working to change the landscape of the G20.”
In the last ten months, Brasil's Presidency organized dozens of unprecedented activities and meetings at the G20 based on the G20 Social Track. For the first time in the G20's 25-year history, civil society leaders sat down with negotiators from the finance and political tracks of all G20 countries to discuss proposals to be submitted to the heads of state.
In this track, several innovative agendas for social participation that have occurred since March within the G20 Social stand out:
» Unprecedented negotiation agendas between civil society and Sherpas, deputy finance ministers, and vice presidents of Central Banks, all held in July, to bring together and align the debate between the population and G20 authorities;
» The Preparatory Meeting for the G20 Social Summit, held in August, expanded the participation process in an unprecedented way, adding leaders and people from communities, grassroots movements and engagement groups to the debates;
» Creation of the G20 Social Participatory, a digital participation tool launched in August by the Brazilian Government, within the Brasil Participatory Platform, designed to receive proposals from civil society around the world, as well as hosting polls and public consultation on the G20 Social;
» Cross-cutting and expanded meetings of the engagement groups – which bring together representatives of civil society and the legislative, judicial, academic, and business sectors in self-managed thematic debates within the G20. Although these groups have officially been part of the forum for fourteen years, it was with the G20 Social project that they were able to expand their participation. Previously, they were restricted to thematic communications, for which they suggested recommendations. With the G20 Social, they are now able to have a voice on agendas alongside G20 authorities and take part in strategic discussions.
THE SOCIAL SUMMIT - This whole process of debate and social participation will culminate in the G20 Social Summit, which will last three days and feature an intense program that will occupy the Olympic Boulevard and Mauá Square, in the port region of Rio de Janeiro. About five thousand people are expected for the Summit's plenary sessions and more than 30,000 people are expected to attend each day of the event, which will also include cultural programs, a fair for exhibiting products made by social organizations, as well as actions organized in various forms by civil society.
