The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty was presented on Tuesday, September 24th, at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York by Wellington Dias, Brazilian Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family, and Fight against Hunger, during the "SDG Moment" event. The Alliance will join the efforts of governments and international organizations to implement practical solutions that eradicate hunger and poverty.

The minister invited leaders of all nations to join the initiative, which will be officially launched in November during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The meeting brought together world leaders, civil society representatives, the private sector, youth, and artists to discuss solutions for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

In his opening remarks, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for a united effort to tackle social inequalities. “There are no more excuses. It is time to fulfill the promise of 2030, to fulfill the promise of the agenda to end poverty and protect the planet,” he said.

Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, also attended the event and emphasized the importance of taking action now to positively impact the future. “Compliance with the schedule is urgent. We have to act now, as soon as possible, for the well-being of the world and everyone in it,” he stressed.

When asked about opportunities for enhancing cooperation in the food sector in the coming years, Minister Wellington Dias advocated for the Global Alliance as a mechanism to overcome food insecurity and poverty. He also invited world leaders to join the initiative, which aligns with SDG 1 (no poverty) and SDG 2 (zero hunger and sustainable agriculture).

“The Alliance is open to the G20 countries and any country wanting to participate. I extend an invitation for each country to participate and contribute with knowledge and resources,” he explained, noting that the initiative will be launched in November during the G20 Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro. “The persistence of hunger and poverty in the 21st century is one of the most difficult challenges for humanity and is not just a problem for the poorest, but for all of humanity,” he added.
