Sherpas’ Track

Sherpas, a term borrowed from the ethnic group who guide expeditions to the summits of the Himalayas, are the personal representatives of the Heads of State and Government of the members of the Group of Twenty. They are also responsible for conducting all the necessary work prior to the G20 Summits. In the case of Mexico, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for overseeing the pre-summit process.

The Sherpas’ track focuses on political, non-financial issues, such as: employment, agriculture, energy, the fight against corruption and development, among others. The Sherpas carry out important planning, negotiation and implementation tasks throughout the entire process. They coordinate the agenda, seek consensus at the highest political levels and help negotiate the Leaders’ positions. Toward the end of the process, along with the Deputy Finance Ministers, the Sherpas prepare the final declaration statement and other supporting documents for the Leaders.

Under the Mexican Presidency of the G20, the Sherpas’ track held a planning meeting on 13-14 December 2011 and its first formal meeting on 2-3 February. Below please find the dates of upcoming Sherpas’ Meetings, as well as links to press communiqués and/or other key messages released after each meeting.

The Sherpas’ track delegates technical and policy analysis to a series of working groups, made up of officials from each member country and international organizations. In addition, the summit agenda is developed in ministerial meetings, seminars and other conferences. By browsing the menu above you can learn more about each official topic.

Under the Mexican Presidency of the G20, the Sherpa is also responsible for holding frequent meetings with other relevant stakeholders, such as the business community, academic institutions and young people in order to facilitate an inclusive and representative dialogue.
