"The G20 Handbook": a publication that explains key concepts and themes about the Forum

The publication, produced by the BRICS Policy Center in collaboration with the Rede Jubileu Sul, elucidates key concepts and provides high-quality information about the G20 for a diverse audience. The proposal is for the Handbook to serve as a comprehensive reference for civil society organizations, the press, academics, and activists seeking information on the forum that convenes the world's largest economies.

While the discussions within the G20 significantly influence the daily lives of people worldwide, understanding the dynamics of the group remains elusive for many. Thus, the publication Caderno para entender o G20 (The G20Handbook) emerges as an additional resource for disseminating information and clarifying the operations of this paramount international cooperation forum, currently chaired by Brasil.

The Handbook is the outcome of a partnership between the BRICS Policy Center, the Think Tanks affiliated with the Institute of International Relations of the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) in Rio de Janeiro, and the Rede Jubileu Sul. The informational material for the Handbook was collectively composed with contributions from various civil society organizations and movements, including notable participation from the Brazilian Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (ABONG), the Brazilian Network for Peoples Integration (REBRIP), and the Institute of Socioeconomic Studies (INESC). The objective is for the publication to not only provide support for civil society but also serve as a reference for the press, academics, activists, and other stakeholders.

"We recognize that the G20 entails both thematic and organizational complexities. In this regard, our aim is to address international issues, often perceived as intricate and abstract, and relate them to people's daily lives”, stated Marta Fernández, BRICS Policy Center’s General Coordinator and one of the authors of the publication.

The Handbook, soon to be available in English, meticulously details various aspects related to the G20. It provides a comprehensive overview of the G20's history, tracing its inception to the contemporary landscape. Additionally, it delves into the forum's internal framework, including its Finance and Sherpa Tracks, alongside the G20 Social initiatives. Under Brasil's presidency, the Handbook elucidates the objectives and coordination efforts within the G20. Notably, it features two special chapters: one dedicated to exploring perspectives from Brazilian civil society organizations regarding the G20, and another analyzing the implications of gender and race in international debates.

The G20 Brasil has created a trilingual e-book available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. This e-book serves as a comprehensive resource detailing essential information about the forum, encompassing its history, member countries, operational procedures, and the roles and priorities associated with the Brazilian presidency. Operating under the motto "building a fair world and a sustainable planet”, the e-book provides valuable insights into Brasil's responsibilities. You can download the e-book titled Brasil na presidência do G20 - Entenda o que é e quais as responsabilidades do Brasil (Brasil’s G20 Presidency – Understand the G20 and Brasil's Responsibilities) for free.

The publication was launched during an event held at the headquarters of the BRICS Policy Center in Rio de Janeiro on February 23, 2024. Henrique Frota, director of ABONG and coordinator of C20, the Civil Society Engagement Group within the G20 Social, delivered a lecture during the event.

Beyond the Handbook

In March 2024, the BPC will host two workshops: one on the 16th with popular journalists, and another on the 20th featuring Jéser Abílio de Souza, a Ph.D. student in International Relations at PUC-Rio de Janeiro and author of a chapter in the Handbook titled Gênero e raça em análises sobre temas que parecem tão distantes? Sim! Porque… (Gender and race in analyses of seemingly distant topics? Yes! Because...). During the workshop, Jéser, a member of the Finance Track coordination of the G20, will discuss the theme of inequality, which has been identified as one of Brasil's priority areas this year.

The BRICS Policy Center is a member of the T20, the Think Tanks Engagement Group, and serves as the overall coordinator for the group's Task Force focused on reforming the international financial system.
