G20

Defense of democracy and global reforms were the main topics of the meeting between Brasil and Spain

In a two-day official visit to Brasil, the President of the Government of Spain presented an agenda with several topics of convergence with the proposals of Brasil’s G20 Presidency. President Lula invited Spain to join the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

This Wednesday (06), during a meeting in Brasilia with the President of the Spanish government Pedro Sánchez, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that “Brasil and Spain share core values including the defense of democracy, the promotion of racial equality, the promotion of social inclusion policies, and a commitment with sustainable development”.

To Lula, it is also key to “seek common solutions to tackle misinformation, which erodes social fabric and undermines the core pillars of our democracy”. Sánchez declared that it was clear during the meeting that “we share visions about important issues, such as the need to defend democracy from extremist attacks such as the ones from 8 January [in Brasil]. This reminds us that we must stand firm in our democratic principles”.

"I reiterated the importance emphasized by the Brazilian Presidency of the G20, regarding the reduction of all forms of inequality, this scourge that afflicts many millions in humanity. It is in this context that the proposal for fair and progressive international taxation, which Brasil advocates within the G20, is situated." - Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brasil.

Convergences at the G20

Lula defended that “It is high time for the super-rich to pay their fair share in taxes”. This was one of the topics defended during the Finance Track meeting held on 28 and 29 February in São Paulo. The Spanish representative indicated that both countries advocate for “an international cooperation based on a reformed global financial system, with the leadership of Brasil (at the G20) this year”.  Spain holds a permanent invitation to the forum of the 20 largest global economies.

There are convergences between the two countries in terms of how to face climate change, as well as the participation of Spain in the Brazilian proposal for a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.  Once again, Lula expressed concern for the “debt that suffocates the developing countries and the major convergence of the Global South regarding the need to reform international organizations”.  Sánchez concluded by saying that “we work to defend priorities such as social justice and a green and fair transition”.  The Spanish President will be in Brasil until next Thursday (07).
