"The world has unlearned how to become indignant and has normalized the unacceptable." Quoting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's phrase, Brazil’s Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Combating Hunger, Wellington Dias, opened his participation at the FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean last Tuesday (20).

The virtual event included discussions around two topics: comments from invited countries on the challenges of reducing hunger and malnutrition, and on trade as a strategic driver of food security.

"The Alliance’s mission is to expand the adoption of good national programs on a large scale to end hunger and poverty; and of policies to ensure the human right to dignity and to adequate, nutritious and healthy food."

Dias presented the Ministry’s main actions to combat hunger and poverty, and Brazil's possible contributions to tackling poverty in Latin America. According to the minister, social inequality is the main obstacle Brazil faces in meeting UN Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 2.

Wellington Dias also emphasized that, to curb the increase in hunger and food insecurity in Brazil, President Lula has announced the creation of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

"The Alliance’s mission is to expand the adoption of good national programs on a large scale to end hunger and poverty; and of policies to ensure the human right to dignity and to adequate, nutritious and healthy food," he stated.

According to the minister, the Alliance will be open to all countries and organizations, and not a discussion forum. "With everyone's participation, we want to create a mechanism to provide necessary political impetus towards mobilizing existing funds and mechanisms, and to better organize them around two principles: focus on the poorest and most vulnerable, and consistent implementation of national policies," said Dias.

The event was also attended by the chief economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Máximo Torero; the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Honduras, Laura Suazo; the Minister of Social Development and Family of Chile, Javiera Toro; the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina, Fernando Vilella; the Minister of Agriculture of the Dominican Republic, Osmar Benítez; Guyana's Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha; the Minister of Agriculture of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saboto Scofield Caesar; Venezuela’s Minister of Agriculture Wilmar Soteldo; and FAO director for Latin America, Mario Lubetkin.
